A group of academics, planners, artists and writers issued a petition gathering signitures, late Thursday’s evening, calling for the immediate release of the active urban planner Ismael Shaikh Hassan who has been arrested since two days by the Lebanese military police in Nahr el Bared.
The petitions states:
Calling for the immediate release of Ismael Shaikh Hassan for the freedom of expression
We- planners, architects, acedemics, artists and activists, tsigning this petition call for the immediate release of the urban planner Ismael Shaikh Hassan who had been active for more than two years volunteering in the reconstruction of Nahr el Bared camp, and defended the civilian issues for teh camps; residents and visitors, and has always cared to say truths; either by exposing the trivial reconstruction process , and the endless postponing, or regarding the measures taken against the civilian dispalced inhabitants of the camp which approaches collective punishment (see his article at Assafir on May 12, 2010). We fear that the reason of arresting Ismael Shaikh Hassan is due to his published opinions in this regard, which poses a serious violation to the freedom of expression, and a new violation to detention provisions in publication cases.
It is worth noting that Ismael Shaikh Hassan is pursuing his PhD in Leuven University in Belgium, and he taught a studio about the reconstruction of Nahr el Bared, and he is editing an academic book about the reconstruction, and prepares an academic course about imagining the spatial return to Palestine.
